Stephen Frear’s “High Fidelity” is a public tribute to music, breakups, and how music gets people through them. However, the film also feels like a nod to its setting, Chicago’s Wicker Park.
Based on Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel of the same name, some fans may be surprised to learn that the original story took place at Hornby’s home in London, England, rather than Chicago. Still, the film transitions seamlessly into the trendy Wicker Park neighborhood and features many of its locations — most notably, our protagonist Rob revisiting his second ex, a famous Critic named Penney to discover what keeps women breaking up with him.
The theater has been around since August 1929, two months before the start of the Great Depression, thus maintaining the grandeur of a movie theater, more akin to the Opera House and Broadway theaters of today. With a huge neon sign and marquee, music Box Describing itself as a “symbol of Chicago’s premier venue for indie, foreign, cult and classic cinema,” it also showcases high-quality reprints (including “high fidelity”) and new releases.
This story originally appeared on Giggster and was produced and published in partnership with Stacker Studio.
