October 22 (UPI) – A bus collided with a truck in central India late Friday, killing 15 people and injuring 40, authorities said.
The bus carries migrant workers who will celebrate Diwali, a Hindu religious festival, in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district. Press Trust of India report.
Rewa police chief Navneet Bhasin said the bus hit the truck from behind as it was passing through a mountain road.
“15 people were killed in the accident and 40 others were injured,” he told the media. ANI News Agency“The victims were mostly labourers who returned to Uttar Pradesh for Diwali. The bus also belongs to that state.”
Twelve victims died at the scene, two others died on the way to the hospital, and another died during treatment, officials said. Due to the severity of the accident, the bodies of the bus driver and conductor had to be pulled from the wreckage with the help of gas cutters, they said.
Indian President Drupadi Murmu says in a statement He was “deeply saddened to hear that a bus accident from Hyderabad in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh to Gorakpur resulted in the deaths of many passengers.
“My deepest condolences to all the bereaved families. I wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”
