Fireworks exploded during Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebrations, injuring 17 people, authorities said.

The blast occurred Saturday in the Gulf Coast town of Huejutla, known as Huasteca.

The municipality of Huejutla said residents of the village of Tehuetlan were celebrating the end of Xantolo, the Huasteca regional variant of Day of the Dead.

Its festivities continue beyond the normal 1-2 November festivities.

A pile of fireworks lit and exploded in the street, sending sparks and explosions to the surrounding crowd, the government said.

A video purporting to show the accident was shared on Twitter.

The town said two pregnant women and three children were among the injured. One of the girls suffered second-degree burns.

Firework accidents are not uncommon in Mexico.

In September, fireworks exploded during a festival west of Mexico City, killing one and injuring 39.
