2 Colombian journalists shot dead, investigation begins

Police are investigating the killing of two Colombian journalists on a highway.

Two journalists were shot and killed by unidentified assailants while they were riding in a car on a highway in northern Colombia, police said on Sunday.

The director of an online radio station, Leiner Montero, and the director of an online news website, Dilia Contreras, were killed near the city of Fundacion, in the province of Magdalena, as they were returning from a celebration of the patron saint in a nearby village.

Magdalena police commander Andres Serna said that according to preliminary investigations, a fight took place involving Montero and several others.

“Following this intolerance, the reporter decided to drive away with Delia and another man and on the way they were killed,” the official told reporters.

“We are committed to the citizens of Magdalena to resolve in the shortest possible time this tragic case involving two journalists, who are highly appreciated among the union, family and acquaintances,” he added.

Although authorities said it was unclear whether the murders were related to the journalists’ professions, the Freedom of the Press Foundation called for a swift investigation into the case and their work considered during the investigation.
