2 killed in Kabul interior ministry mosque bombing World News

A suicide bomber attacked the center of Taliban power on Wednesday, causing an explosion at a government building in the Afghan capital Kabul, killing at least two people, a Taliban official said.

The afternoon blast took place inside the mosque of the Afghan Interior Ministry, which is responsible for security and law enforcement in the country.

The interior ministry is located on the main road next to the international airport in the Afghan capital, Kabul, and in its own fortifications.

A mosque at a government building in the Afghan capital Kabul exploded on Wednesday as workers and tourists prayed, a Taliban official said.

The afternoon blast took place inside the mosque of the Afghan Interior Ministry, which is responsible for security and law enforcement in the country.

The interior ministry is located on the main road next to the international airport in the Afghan capital, Kabul, and in its own fortifications.

The cause of the explosion is unclear, but if it was an attack, it would mean the attackers had attacked the Taliban’s center of power.

Abdul Nafi Takor, a Taliban-appointed interior ministry spokesman, tweeted: “Unfortunately, an explosion occurred inside an attached mosque where some interior ministry staff and tourists were praying. Details will be shared later.”

He did not say whether the mosque was inside the ministry or nearby. There is no immediate information on casualties. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast, but the Taliban’s main rival, the Islamic State group, has been waging a violent campaign that has intensified since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in August 2021.

A suicide bombing at an education center in Kabul last week killed as many as 52 people, according to an Associated Press tally, with the Interior Ministry mosque bombing more than double the death toll acknowledged by Taliban officials.
