The University’s global engagement is fostered on campus and extends internationally through its commitment to research, innovation, service and international alumni success.
March 30, Emory University Office of Global Strategy and Initiatives (GSI) hosted the 2023 International Awards Ceremony in the Great Hall to recognize three outstanding members of the Emory community whose work has contributed significantly to advancing the University’s global engagement: Jeffry Lesser, Woo Taek Kim and Daphne Orr .
Per year, international awards Recognizes the outstanding achievements of Emory University faculty, international alumni and staff who have made extraordinary contributions to Emory University’s global work and reputation. The event provides an opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of the recipients and their positive impact on the University and the world.
“This award ceremony is particularly special because it marks the first time since 2020 that we have come together in person to recognize outstanding contributions to global engagement by members of the Emory community,” said Associate Provost for Global Strategy and Initiatives said Chief Philip Wainwright. “It’s satisfying to celebrate and connect, especially after the past few years of pandemic-related challenges.”
The honorees demonstrate Emory’s commitment to making a global impact through their outstanding work on campus and abroad. they are:

- Uze Kim 90MBASheth Distinguished International Alumni Award (Next Entertainment World Media Group)
- Daphne OrrInternational Outreach Award (University of Oxford)
Creekmore International Award
Jeffrey Lesser is the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of History, known for his work on Brazilian studies and modern Latin American history. He is an expert in the construction of Brazilian national identity, focusing on issues of race, ethnicity and immigration; he is currently researching the relationship between health and immigration in Brazil.
Lesser is the author of several acclaimed books, including “Immigration, Race, and National Identity in Brazil” and “Welcoming the Unwelcome: Brazil and the Jewish Question.” He has received prestigious grants from organizations such as Fulbright, Fulbright-Hays, the Social Science Research Council, the Ford Foundation, and the Council of American Learned Societies.
While at Emory, Lesser held several leadership positions, including director of the Latin American Studies and Jewish Studies programs and his time as chair of the History Department.Most recently, as director Harley Global Institutehe restructured the institute to foster innovation and creativity through interdisciplinary programs that connect Emory with researchers around the world.
“The global fellows and faculty at the Harley Institute who have shared my research with me over the years have helped me become a better scholar and teacher,” Lesser said. “This makes the Creekmore Award a collective award for Emory’s global researchers who demonstrate every day how academic excellence can occur when research and teaching are placed at the pinnacle of Emory’s global engagement.”
Sheth Distinguished International Alumni Award
Woo Taek Kim 90MBA is an entertainment industry luminary who has driven creative change for over 25 years. He is the CEO and Chairman of Next Entertainment World (NEW), a Seoul-based content media group he founded in 2008.
Under his leadership, NEW has become an innovative force in the Korean entertainment industry and pioneered entirely new business models in the production and distribution of cultural content. Instead of relying on a traditional vertically integrated business structure, NEW has expanded its business through partnerships with global leaders such as Disney, Netflix and Library Pictures International. NEW’s focus has expanded beyond film, with production and distribution operations now spanning a wide range of media, including music and television. He also supports new artists and studios, contributing to the diversity of entertainment.
“I want to spread stories that move people, connect people to each other globally, and foster common ground between different communities,” Kim said. “NEW’s hope and vision is to become a curator of world culture.”
Kim’s film credits include “Pieta,” winner of the Golden Lion at the 69th Venice Film Festival, and the hit “Train to Busan,” which premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. He and his wife, Mimi Han, are alumni of Oxford University and Emory College, and they are highly dedicated supporters of the University and actively contribute to the development of the alumni community as alumni leaders.
“In addition to being the greatest gift to my family, Emory has given me a fresh perspective of the global business world, a strong business mindset, and instilled in me a set of values that have guided my career and life decisions,” He said.
International Promotion Award
daphne orr is director International Student Program Since 2016, he has worked at Oxford College of Emory University. With nearly 30 years of international education experience, Orr began her career as an ESL instructor; her current responsibilities include providing immigration advice to students on F-1 visas.
In addition, Orr has designed and implemented programs to assist international students in their transition to life in the US and Oxford. She also advises several student groups on leadership development and develops programs to help faculty and staff develop greater intercultural competence and understanding.
“I love how people and students are at the center of Emory and Oxford,” Orr said. “International education is so transformative, and I am influenced by and learn from students every day.”
Orr has been active with NAFSA (National Association of Educators) for many years, speaking at regional and national conferences. She has also served on NAFSA’s Crisis Management Task Force, chaired the NAFSA Crisis Management Subcommittee, and served as a District 7 coach for NAFSA Academy. In 2014, Orr was selected as a Fulbright: German Symposium for International Educators grantee.
Orr holds a BA in German from Tulane University and a master’s degree in Conflict Management from Kennesaw State University, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Education at the University of Illinois with a concentration in Global Studies, International Education, and Leadership.
