3 escaped chimpanzees recaptured in Sweden; 4 shot dead | World News

[ad_1]

Officials at a Swedish zoo managed to bring three chimpanzees back to a safe space after breaking out of their enclosure, but four others were shot dead.

The surviving animals are currently being cared for, and one of the injured animals is receiving veterinary care, Furuvik Zoo said in a statement Saturday.

The orangutans escaped on Wednesday, some from the monkey houses where they lived. Officers were forced to shoot them because of the danger they posed to the public. Two were shot dead in the zoo, and one was confirmed dead in the monkey house. When keepers were finally able to get inside on Saturday, they found the body of a fourth chimpanzee.

“What happened is a huge tragedy and a huge failure for us,” the zoo said in a statement on Facebook.

“We are all very saddened by what happened and mourn our beloved chimpanzees Linda, Torsten, Santino and Manda. … We are very eager to figure out how this happened Yes, the investigation may show where we (failed) or whether we could have acted differently.”

The zoo identified the surviving chimpanzees as Selma, Maria-Magdalena and Tjobbe and said Selma was being treated for her injuries.

Furuvik Zoo is located near Gavle, 165 kilometers (100 miles) north of Stockholm. It is part of an amusement park. It is also the only primate research station in the Nordic countries, according to the park website.

It’s not the first time animals have escaped from a Swedish zoo in recent months. In October, a venomous king cobra escaped from a terrarium at a Swedish zoo, only to return on its own a week later.
