KATHMANDU, Nov. 10 (PTI) A 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck western Nepal on Thursday, a day after a powerful 6.6-magnitude quake struck the Himalayan nation, killing six people and sparking public panic.
According to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center, the quake struck at 5:13 a.m. on Thursday and its epicentre was in the Kada district of the rural municipality of Kaputa de Cheddarha in the Bajoura district, 750 kilometers from Kathmandu.
The center said the latest earthquake was not an aftershock of the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, but a new one.
So far, no casualties have been reported.
Wednesday’s quake, which struck at 2:12 a.m. in Kaptad National Park in the Doti district of the Himalayan earthquake-prone region, damaged dozens of homes and caused panic among sleeping people.
Home Ministry spokesman Phanindra Pokharel told PTI by phone that six people were killed and eight others were injured in the quake.
He said the government had instructed the local government to immediately distribute relief supplies and compensation to the victims.
Relatives of the victims will receive compensation of 200,000 rupees each, he said.
Six injured people have been taken to Doti District Hospital, while two others with serious injuries have been airlifted to Seti District Hospital in Dangathi, according to Home Office officials.
At least 10 houses were completely damaged in the quake, they said.
Three people are missing and are believed to be trapped in the collapse of their house in Purvijoki, according to Nepal Army spokesman Narayan Silwar. He said the Nepal Army has started searching for the missing persons.
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is campaigning in western Nepal, is safe.
He was attending an election rally and meeting people in the Dhangadhi district, 160 kilometers south of the epicenter.
Although the prime minister was safe, the tremor was also felt in Dhangadhi, according to Bokarel.
Nepal will contest elections for the federal and provincial councils on November 20.
Deuba has instructed officials to arrange for proper treatment of the wounded immediately in the earthquake-affected areas.
“My condolences to those killed in the Daderdura earthquake and my condolences to the bereaved families,” he tweeted.
“I also instruct the relevant authorities to expedite the rescue and treatment of those injured in the accident,” he added.
Nepal Army and Nepal Police personnel have been mobilized to carry out rescue operations.
Earthquakes are frequent in the mountainous areas of Nepal.
On October 19, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Nepal’s capital Kathmandu and surrounding areas, forcing many people to flee their homes for safety.
The quake was felt in the Kathmandu Valley and adjacent areas. There were no reports of damage or casualties.
In April 2015, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook Nepal, killing nearly 9,000 people and injuring nearly 22,000.
It also damaged more than 800,000 homes and school buildings. PTI SBP GRS VM AKJ VM
