40,000 attend COP27 in Egypt; UAE showcases achievements

The UN climate summit COP27 opened on Sunday in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, with a growing call for rich countries to compensate poorer countries most vulnerable to climate change. The summit will see representatives from around the world take part in annual climate change negotiations.

Diplomats from more than 130 countries are expected to push for a dedicated loss and damage financing mechanism at COP27.

With more than 40,000 attendees expected, the summit is expected to be one of the most attended annual global climate conferences to be held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6 to November 18.

Speaking before the meeting, Ambassador Wael Aboulmagd, Special Representative of the President of COP27, said: “The Egyptian presidency team has worked tirelessly to create an enabling environment for successful negotiations. As the host of the COP, we are keen to bring together representatives of countries and stakeholders from around the world. , and provide the necessary impetus to take the necessary action to implement climate commitments and commitments urgently and at scale.”

The Sharm El Sheikh International Conference Centre (SHICC) will form the overall blue zone for COP27.

It aims to foster inclusive and dynamic dialogue and engagement among climate actors through events, exhibitions, workshops, cultural performances and talks.

The Sharm el-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit will be held on 7-8 November and will be attended by all participating heads of state and government.

The summit will be followed by roundtables focusing on six key themes: just transition, food security, innovative finance for climate and development, investing in the future of energy, water security and climate change, and sustainability for vulnerable communities.

During the global negotiations to be held in Egypt during the conference, the Egyptian presidency of COP27 has also designated several key thematic days, including group pledge opportunities, discussions, roundtables and side events.

These theme days are part of an effort to advance climate action that addresses existing implementation bottlenecks and gaps, and deepen engagement with youth, women, civil society and indigenous peoples, among others, at the center of discussions.

Key areas of focus include the commitment to innovation and clean technology, and the central role of water and agriculture in the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, energy transition, decarbonization efforts and finance. Three days will be dedicated to youth and future generations, gender and civil society, their contributions, the challenges they face, the solutions they offer, and how to mainstream their participation into the planning and implementation of climate policy.

During its participation in the 2022 Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), which will begin on Sunday (November 6), the UAE will showcase its diplomatic activities on climate action, energy transition and support Preparations for hosting COP28 next year.

Through close cooperation with Egypt, the UAE will link the outcomes of COP27 and COP28 to support climate action and raise awareness of its vision and efforts to achieve sustainable development.

The UAE has a wealth of achievements in climate action, and it sees this as an opportunity to help find practical solutions to this global problem that affects everyone, in line with its efforts to diversify the economy and upskill youth. Consistent.

The UAE is one of the world’s largest donors of humanitarian aid and provides direct aid during climate-related disasters and conflicts, the impacts of which are exacerbated by climate change. The country was the first in the region to sign and ratify the Paris Agreement in 2015 and announce a climate neutrality strategy for 2050.

Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, COP21 member countries must work to pass ambitious climate requirements.

The ultimate goal of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere and prevent dangerous anthropogenic disturbances to the climate system within a time frame that allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and achieve sustainable development.

The UNFCCC Conference of the Parties is held annually and is the largest annual meeting of the United Nations (UN).

With 197 parties, the UNFCCC is an almost universal member and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement, whose main goal is to bring the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to pre-industrial levels of 1.5°C.
