Current City I live a few miles from the nearest village, surrounded by stunning countryside, with a girlfriend, a dog, three cats, two sheep and a horse.
really want to be in I’m fine here.
excited I have a debut solo album – radio songs – January 23.
My current music collection is quite large Other stuff piled on top. I just moved studios and it’s still a mess.
a little more Christmas music from the 78’s. I bought a lovely 1960s gramophone a few years ago and we used it to play Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra on Christmas morning.
preferred format I listen to most music on Spotify these days. I listen to a lot of music while I work, so convenience is the main thing. I still yearn for something like a tape that picks up right where you left off.
5 Albums I Can’t Live Without:
1
spirit of edentalk about
my favorite album ever. In fact, I can probably solve this problem in one go. It’s pure emotion, pure loveliness, and remains the gold standard of techno music recording. Songs have room to breathe and time to develop. Upon release, the band was sued by their record label, EMI, arguing that the album was “not commercially satisfactory”. The case was laughed out of court.
2
walkie talkieAir
In many ways, it’s the perfect pop record: killer songs, virtuoso performances, and genre-breaking production. The Air have never had enough success on the charts to top the charts, which to me only adds to their appeal.
3
good computerradiohead
Probably not a surprising choice, but in my opinion, this is one of the best albums ever made. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve bought them, in various formats and reprints. Record has always been with me like a wise and trustworthy friend.
4
Ex Machina (Original Soundtrack)Ben Salisbury and Jeff Barrow
Ben and Geoff pioneered new ways of combining electronics and acoustic instruments for truly disturbing and haunting sounds. If the 2023 soundtrack sounds less revolutionary, it’s because everyone is using their technology now.
Also, check out Colin Stetson, who wrote the entire film score by electronically manipulating the saxophone to make sounds that will scare your pants.
5
Elenafloating point number
It’s beautiful, complex and groundbreaking. Seven years after its release, it still sounds fresh in the dizzying, ever-changing world of electronic music.
