The two countries are celebrating the golden jubilee of the establishment of diplomatic relations

Last year was historic for both India and the UAE. India has begun to celebrate its 75th anniversary of independence, culminating today (15 August); the UAE has also drawn up plans to celebrate its golden jubilee on 2 December – the young Arab nation founded in 1971.

This year, India and the UAE are also celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations. In the year-long celebration, there was a surprise: Expo 2020 Dubai took place between October 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022, although it didn’t go as planned.

As bilateral ties continue to strengthen, historic milestones for both countries are within a year.

Here are lesser-known facts about the two countries bound by a shared history and culture:

>> The centuries-old connection between the people of India and the UAE is rooted in trade and commerce. This link was established between 3300 BC and 1300 BC during the glorious Indus Valley Civilization.This is also the era of prosperous maritime trade between the two places

>> In the early 20th century, Mumbai (now known as Bombay) became the largest pearl trading center in the region.This emergence coincided with the rise of the pearl industry in the armistice countries that came under British rule and became the UAE in 1971, initially consisting of six emirates on the south coast of the Arabian Gulf, including Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah , Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain, 1869-1968

>> The two currencies remained the same until 1973 when the dirham replaced the UAE’s Gulf rupee.Records show that in 1972, India was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with the UAE, followed by its mission the following year

>> The shared journey of the two peoples flourished long before the establishment of the UAE.According to the International Migrant Stock 2020 published by the Population Division of the United Nations (UN) Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the Indian diaspora community in the UAE is estimated at 3.5 million, the largest ethnic community in the Arabian Gulf country and about 30% of its population

>> The Indian diaspora is one of the most active and dynamic in the world.More than 18 million Indians live overseas, according to latest UN figures

>> Although Indians lived in the UAE from pre-British colonial rule until 1971, their numbers increased after the establishment of the UAE. The real impetus came in the 1990s, when Dubai was becoming a global trading hub. The emirate’s massive infrastructure boom has attracted talent from India.

>> Indian expatriates living in the UAE make up more than 20% of the total number of non-resident Indians (NRIs). Dubai is considered the second city after Durban, a coastal city in KwaZulu-Natal province in eastern South Africa with the most NRIs

>> Since taking office in May 2014, as of August, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited 64 times, including 4 visits to the UAE. His 4 trips to the UAE are comparable to Singapore. Other countries he has visited more times are France, Germany and the United States of America, six and seven times respectively.PM Modi visits UAE in 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2022

>> Similarly, President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited India twice, including the official upgrade of bilateral relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CEPA) in January 2017

>> Bilateral trade, which before the 1960s was limited to spices, dates, pearls and fishing, has changed dramatically.It has grown from around $180 million in the 1970s to $59 billion in 2019-20

>> India and UAE signed bilateral CEPA in February. The agreement has the potential to increase trade between India and the UAE from $60 billion to $100 billion over the next five years. The UAE is India’s third-largest trading partner after China and the US.UAE is also India’s second largest export destination

>> According to CEPA, about 90% of exports and 80% of trade lines from India to the UAE will be duty-free. Tariff-free access to the UAE for Indian products is expected to grow to 97% of the UAE tariff line or 99% of the value of Indian exports over the next decade

>> CEPA enables automatic registration and marketing authorization of generic drugs in India within 90 days of approval. Under the free trade agreement, India offers tariff concessions on gold imports from the UAE, while Indian jewellery exporters enjoy zero-duty access to the UAE market. UAE accounts for 16% of global diamond, gold and jewellery trade

>> After the signing of CEPA, the India-UAE Cultural Council was established. The committee aims to encourage cross-cultural exchanges between the two countries.It is promoting a common cultural heritage and paving the way for a common future cooperation

>> The India Pavilion is one of the few permanent structures at Expo 2020 Dubai, which closes six months later on March 31. The pavilion, which cost an estimated $68 million to build, showcases an emerging India dedicated to the idea of ​​”shared prosperity”.The pavilion’s tagline – “Open, Growth, Opportunity” – reflects the vision of the UAE leadership

>> The India-UAE Joint Commemorative Stamp Physical Edition was issued in July to mark the golden jubilee of bilateral relations. In early February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a joint commemorative stamp on the 75th anniversary of India’s independence to mark the UAE’s golden jubilee.

>> Last October, the United States, India, Israel and the United Arab Emirates formed a new joint working group to coordinate a strategy to align it with the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue — the Indo-Pacific Quartet that connects the United States and India with Australia and Japan Compare

>> The Middle East Quartet – when it comes into force – can be seen as part of an effort to rearrange order and balance of power in the Middle East, in which India will play a key role because of its geographic location, economic power and political interests

>> During Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the UAE in 2015, space cooperation between India and the UAE developed rapidly. The two space agencies jointly developed the nanosatellite Nayif-1, which was launched from the Satish Dhavan Space Centre in Sriharikota.India

>> The UAE’s Indian bigwigs were the ones who flocked during the first oil boom of 1974-75.Most of them belong to communities on the west coast of India such as Sindh, Kutch, Gujarat, Mangalore and Malayali, regardless of their religious identity
