542 Nigerians stranded in UAE return to country

The federal government has evacuated 542 Nigerians stranded in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) back to the country.

The evacuees, consisting of 79 men, 460 women and three infants, arrived at Abuja’s Namdi Azikiwe International Airport on a Maxair chartered flight at 4.29am on Sunday.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and airport officials, security agencies including National Commission for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), National Agency to Prevent Human Trafficking (NAPTIP), Nigerian Diaspora Council, National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigerian Correctional Services Agency, Nigerian Customs Service, Port Health Service, National Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

Returnees are screened by NCDC introduced by various relevant agencies and cleared by Nigerian Immigration Service.

Earlier, NEMA Director-General Mustafa Habib Ahmed, in a statement from media chief Ezekiel Manzo, warned them to learn from their experience and become law-abiding citizens who promote economic growth and a positive image of Nigeria.

He was represented by Finance and Accounting Director Sani Jiba, who said the federal government had approved the evacuation and provided returnees with tokens to support returnees returning home.

The Nigerian Consul General in Dubai, Ambassador Mohammad Atinuk Taybat, who accompanied the return flight back, thanked the federal government for its extraordinary intervention to safely evacuate stranded citizens back home in his speech.
