6.8-magnitude earthquake hits Mexico, 2 dead | World News from The Associated Press

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook Mexico early Thursday, killing at least two people, damaging buildings and triggering landslides.

The quake struck at 1:19 a.m. near the epicenter of the 7.6-magnitude quake happened three days ago in the western state of Michoacan. It was also blamed for the deaths of two people.

The U.S. Geological Survey said Thursday’s quake was centered 31 miles (50 kilometers) south-southwest of Aguilera, Michoacan, at a depth of 15 miles (24.1 kilometers).

The Michoacan state government said the quake was felt across the state. It reported damage to a building in the city of Uruapan and some landslides on the highway.

President Andres Manuel López Obrador tweeted that Monday’s quake was an aftershock and was also felt in Colima, Jalisco and Guerrero.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said on Twitter that two people had died – a woman who fell down the stairs of her home and a man who suffered a heart attack. Earthquake sirens sounded and residents crowded the streets.

The earthquake shook an already jittery country.The stronger earthquake on Monday was The third major earthquake on September 19 – In 1985, 2017 and now 2022. The September 19, 2017 and 2022 earthquakes occurred shortly after an annual earthquake drill held on September 19 each year to commemorate the devastating 1985 earthquake that killed some 9,500 people.
