As veganism has grown in popularity over the past few years, many people are starting to wonder — if not believe — about the benefits of this food trend. Once pushed aside, the discussion about veganism has now found its place in the mainstream as an active part of the discussion around creating a more sustainable future.

Plant-based encourages us to move away from overconsumption of animal products as a form of correction, leading to more favorable conditions. As the vegan lifestyle becomes more mainstream, the food and beverage industry is starting to reflect the shift, with more vegan joints opening and existing restaurants trying to add vegan options to existing menus. With a complete range of plants, growing milk, vegan cheese and imitation meat varieties, going green in the city has never been easier. We take a look at Dubai’s burgeoning vegan scene.

As its name suggests, VEGO Cafe’s menu is entirely vegetarian and almost two-thirds plant-based. While there are plenty of vegetarian options, like Tofu Florentine and The Vego Uttapam, some of their non-vegetarian dishes, like the Avo Toast and Bombay Grill sandwiches, can easily be swapped out for plant-based ingredients. VEGO Cafe’s menu features a variety of sandwiches, sliders, vegan desserts, and more, including gluten- and refined-sugar-free options. However, the best seller is the veggie burger (as follows) many claims will force you to switch to the plant based version.

Location: Mankhool, Dubai; Average cost: AED 85

If names aren’t enough, we’ll let the menu do the talking. For all plant-based eaters, even those looking to change things up a bit, this is a foodie haven with innovative dishes that you can’t skip. Born in 2017 to make vegan food more accessible, affordable and approachable, Just Vegan now has restaurants in the Middle East, US, UK and Southeast Asia. Their vegan menu is a spin-off of “meat” dishes, including a range of plant-based pastas, pizzas and veggie burgers that vegetarians can savor guilt-free. If that wasn’t enough, the lush green decor is sure to transport you into another vegan world.

Location: Dubai Marina and Umm Suqeim 1, Dubai; Average cost: Dh 180

If you’re craving a vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free menu, look no further than the bounty beet! From healthy breakfast options to soups, burgers and bowls, all of their unique dishes use creativity to tickle the taste buds. You can’t miss their Son of Chic, a chickpea and spinach omelet stuffed with vegan cheese, asparagus, tomato, mushroom and cashew ravioli served in a hearty bowl of chia and avocado On toast, spread on gluten-free bread. Their blue mermaid bowl, pictured below, has gained a following of its own.

Location: Le Méridien Dubai Mina Saiyah Beach Resort & Marina, Al Sufouh; Average cost: Dh320 (excluding homemade drinks)

Indian cuisine is probably one of the most vegan-friendly dishes in the world, simply because the majority of the subcontinent’s population is vegetarian. So it’s only natural to expect the most authentic and delicious vegetarian options at My Govinda’s, an Indian vegetarian and vegan restaurant. If you’re a food lover looking for irresistible flavors without sacrificing plant-based ‘saatvik cuisine’ and ditching the onions and garlic, then here’s a notch for veganism and this is for you place. Their food is made with fresh vegetables and fruits, preferably organic, and the menu includes low-calorie, high-protein, vegan, gluten-free and even oil-free options.

Place: Calama; average cost: AED 150

Featuring a variety of hues, textures, flavors, aesthetics and aromas, this unpretentious restaurant believes in the magic of “the goodness of the earth”. Their website clearly states that they are committed to using innovative technology to create healthy meals and great culinary experiences. Voted Best Vegetarian Restaurant – 2018 Zomato User’s Choice Awards, this restaurant brings delicious vegetarian dishes to the table, including vegan brownies and delicious pasta. The zen-like vibe, with a burst of greenery, adds to the restaurant’s charm.

Location: JLT, Cluster J; Average cost: AED 135

Wild & The Moon is more than a restaurant, it is a lifestyle movement by a group of chefs, food lovers and naturopaths that brings together the holistic dimension of food consumption under one roof. An urban chic restaurant serving pure, nutrient-dense plant-based cold-pressed juices, smoothies, salads, soups, desserts, Super Bowls and snacks. Wild & The Moon’s uses organic, local, ethically sourced ingredients that are free of refined sugar, additives or chemicals, GMOs, gluten and dairy. This Ramadan, Wild and Moon also brings you Wild Supper Club – Iftar Edition, featuring wild-crafted dishes with an Asian twist, including a selection of plant-based sushi for you to try!

This elite French organic café and boutique offers an extensive plant-based menu that changes daily based on harvest, with sugar-free, dairy-free and vegan options. Comptoir 102 has won the What’s On Award for Best Healthy Cafe in Dubai and uses ancient techniques of pre-soaking, fermentation, low temperature cooking, steaming and dehydration to create food to optimise taste, digestion and absorption of nutrients. The warm and comfortable interior of the restaurant creates the perfect ambience during the hot months.

Location: Jumeirah 1, Dubai; Average cost: AED 190

Once you get past your initial concerns about nutrient intake and dietary impact, one of the main arguments around eating vegan foods is the price point at which vegan foods are typically positioned. Vegetarian restaurants tend to be slightly more expensive when one has to opt for a vegan option, which can also be a deciding factor. More recently, though, the restaurant industry has taken notice and is working to make vegan food more widely available. Namaste Vegan DXB is an all-vegetarian restaurant with an Indian twist. The restaurant includes all the classic Indian dishes a food lover could want, but with a vegan twist. Whether it’s vegan soy chaap biryani or tofu biryani or vegan vegetable korma, this food joint has you covered! If you want to eat clean at home, they even do a specially curated meal delivery service as your weekly meal plan fix.
