Officials say 71 patients have interrupted oxygen supply in intensive care
Russian authorities said that on Monday, an oxygen pipe in a hospital in Vladikavkaz, the capital of the Republic of North Ossetia, ruptured, resulting in the death of nine coronavirus patients.
The Russian news agency quoted the ministry as saying: “Nine coronavirus patients died due to hypoxia in the clinical hospital of the Vladikavkaz Republic.”
They also quoted the acting chairman of the Republic, Sergey Minyaro, as saying that “oxygen pipes were broken” and “oxygen supply was interrupted.”
The Ministry of Health stated that 71 patients were in the intensive care unit at the time of the accident, and 13 of them were supported by “mechanical ventilation”.
It said that all nine patients who died were on ventilators.
Minyaylo said that nine patients had suffered “90% damage” to their lungs before the pipe ruptured, and said it was too early to blame the accident for their deaths.
He said that the problem was “discovered and eliminated in 30 to 40 minutes,” and the remaining patients were transferred to “oxygen cylinders and spare oxygen sources”.
He added that the Republic of North Ossetia in the Russian North Caucasus region has no problem in providing oxygen to its hospitals.
During the pandemic, many accidents occurred in the coronavirus hospital in Russia, resulting in the death of patients.
In June of this year, a fire broke out in a hospital in the Russian city of Ryazan, southeast of Moscow, killing three people. It is believed that the fire was caused by a ventilator failure.
In May last year, several people were killed in the fire in hospitals in Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is believed that a malfunctioning ventilator also caused the fire.
According to statistics from Agence France-Presse, in terms of coronavirus cases, Russia is the fourth worst-hit country in the world, with nearly 6.5 million registered.
With 165,650 deaths from the virus, Russia is the country with the highest official death toll of Covid-19 in Europe-even though the authorities have been accused of downplaying the severity of the country’s outbreak.
Based on a broader definition of coronavirus-related deaths, the statistical agency Rosstat stated that as of the end of May, there were at least 290,000 deaths in Russia.
