ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Sheikh Baz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s support for the UAE to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference or the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (commonly known as COP28).
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, President-elect of COP28, UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change and Minister of Industry and Technology, visited Pakistan and discussed issues of mutual concern during his meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister and Minister of Climate Change, Sherry Rehman .
During his visit, Dr. Jaber met with Prime Minister Sheikh Baz Sharif to discuss bilateral affairs as well as regional and international issues of mutual concern, particularly the climate change agenda.
The Prime Minister has full confidence in the President-designate’s ability to conduct this important meeting.
UAE officials appreciated the efforts of Pakistan, one of the most affected countries, in addressing the adverse effects of climate change. He also expressed the UAE’s strong interest in investing in renewable energy projects in Pakistan. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding in the presence of the prime minister outlining a roadmap for such investments in Pakistan.
Dr Al Jaber also met with Federal Climate Change Minister Senator Sherry Rahman. The minister congratulated President-elect UAE for hosting the next COP 28 and briefed him on Pakistan’s concerns on global climate change.
The two sides discussed expected solutions to problems arising from these changes, including the implementation of the Loss and Damage Fund established at COP 27 in Sharm el-Sheikh last year.
Dr. Jaber also addressed diplomats, academics, students and civil society representatives at the Diplomatic Academy. He shared his vision as President-elect, saying that COP28 will be an inclusive and transformative platform for mitigating global climate issues. During his visit, he also met with youth representatives from the COP Youth Project.
The president-elect’s visit provides an opportunity for substantive engagement between Pakistan and the UAE in important areas such as climate change and alternative energy.
This will help strengthen mutual trust and mutually beneficial cooperation between Pakistan and the UAE on issues that are prominent on the global agenda.
