Ambassador Henry Mayaga, Consul General of Uganda in Dubai, met Mohammad Ruta, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce (DCC) to further explore the development of business ties between the two countries.

Mayorga was accompanied by Asha Nabbanja, Second Secretary, Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Abu Dhabi, and the DCC Chairperson was accompanied by the Vice President of International Relations, Ha Hassan Al Hashemi and Khalid Al Ali, Regional Director for Africa.

Various topics were discussed during the meeting, including the upcoming second Uganda-United Arab Emirates (UAE) Business Forum, which is scheduled to take place in Uganda in the first week of October 2023.

The forum is co-hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of Uganda in Dubai.

Mayega said that this year’s forum will focus on establishing public-private partnerships, joint ventures and business-to-business relationships in commercial agriculture, infrastructure development, tourism, manufacturing, mineral development and energy fields/sectors.

They also discussed the formation of the Uganda Business Council to partner with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and the Uganda Chamber of Commerce to establish businesses in Dubai and Uganda, as well as a proposed trade business mission from Dubai to Uganda. According to Mayega, both parties agreed that the list of bankable projects open for investment should be shared with DCC so that it can be forwarded to investors who may form a delegation to the upcoming Uganda-UAE Business Forum.

“We also agreed that the proposed trade mission planned for next year would be conducted jointly during the business forum and that the consulate would communicate to DCC the composition of the Uganda Business Council at the earliest opportunity,” he noted.

Mayega said it was part of the country’s attempt to strengthen ties and trade with Dubai and the UAE.

Since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations in 2009, Uganda’s exports to the UAE have continued to increase, from US$300 million in 2018 to US$1.85 billion in 2020. The main exports are high-value crops, labor externalization and valuable minerals.

The Consulate General of Uganda in the Emirate of Dubai opened its doors last June.

The UAE is currently Uganda’s largest trading partner in the region. Mayega noted that Uganda must continue to “strengthen this partnership” if it is to industrialize its economy and shift its focus from low-value agriculture to high-value-added manufacturing.

Mayega stressed that the agri-industry was a logical investment target given the country’s desire to move towards agro-processing.

Earlier this year, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni also held high-level meetings with UAE investors and leaders, focusing on Uganda’s need for value-added raw materials produced in the country.
