Gatwick Airport avoids strikes as workers reach a settlement

London’s Gatwick Airport dodged a scheduled strike over the weekend as more workers accepted an improved pay offer. Ground handlers from four companies were initially set to strike on July 28 and August 4 due to failed pay and working conditions negotiations.

However, following successful talks, employees at ASC and Menzies Aviation agreed to a salary increase, leading to the cancellation of their strike at the airport.

Across Europe’s aviation industry, from air traffic controllers to ground handlers, numerous workers have threatened to strike during the busy summer travel season, causing airlines to face flight delays and cancellations.

Menzies workers under a Wizz Air contract voted in favor of a 13% pay increase for ground handlers and a 17% raise for the lowest paid employees, while ASC workers under a TUI contract accepted a double-digit salary increase.

In addition, around 600 DHL employees, working under an EasyJet contract, called off their strike at Gatwick for the two weekends after they voted in favor of a 15% salary increase.
