FBI screening trims Maui fire missing list to 388

The count of missing individuals in the aftermath of Maui’s wildfire catastrophe has fallen to 388, a considerable reduction from previous estimates, as numerous initially reported missing persons have been located.

Maui County, in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has released a validated list of those unaccounted for since the August 8 wildfire ravaged the coastal town of Lahaina.

The county’s statement revealed that an additional 1,732 people who were reported missing have been found safe and well.

Despite initial fears of significant casualties, search teams combing through Lahaina’s remaining structures have not discovered large-scale fatalities, according to Hawaii’s governor.

The death toll stands at 115, with only 5% of the burned area left to search. Governor Josh Green indicated that the count of unaccounted individuals will likely decrease notably as the FBI eliminates duplicate names from a list compiled by multiple agencies.
