The company said: “This important step brings the company closer to completing the 1,200-kilometer railway project as planned, initially estimated to cost 40 billion dirhams.”
The railway project aims to connect the UAE’s trade and industrial hubs and will become an important part of the Gulf Cooperation Council railway network, connecting seven emirates with five neighboring Gulf countries.
Sheikh Taiab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Crown Court and chairman of the Etihad Railway Company, held a virtual meeting with the company’s board of directors to review the construction project Progress.
Despite the challenges faced by the coronavirus pandemic, Sheikh Teab praised the achievements of the Etihad Railway team.
The railway project was launched in 2009 and the first phase was put into operation in 2016. There are two trains each day that can transport up to 22,000 tons of sulfur across the country. In any one journey, each person can tow up to 110 trucks.
Since 2016, two 264-kilometer tracks have been in operation, transporting particulate sulfur from the gas fields of Shah and Mount Habu to the export point of Ruwais.
In the second phase of the project, more than 600 kilometers of additional track will be laid from Ghuweifat, which borders Saudi Arabia, to Fujairah on the east coast.
Sheikh Theab stated that Etihad Railways will continue to work hard to realize the vision of leadership to develop strategic projects, which is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the UAE.
“The Etihad Railway Company will connect seven important regions of the UAE through a track of more than 1,200 kilometers to promote the UAE’s social and economic development and to maintain a global positioning consistent with the UAE’s century-old 2071,” he said.
This year, the Etihad Railway successfully retained 40% of the network’s annual transportation capacity, and after the completion of the second phase, it will reach 60 million tons of cargo each year. This is achieved through commercial agreements signed by the Etihad Railway Company, including commercial agreements with one of the world’s largest quarrying companies Stevin Rock, Western Bainoona Group, and Al Ghurair Iron & Steel (AGIS).
The company said in a statement: “The company will continue to establish further business partnerships and strategic agreements so that companies can benefit from the unparalleled service, economic and logistics advantages of the UAE National Railway Network.”
The railway network extends westward to the border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The west is connected to Saudi Arabia through Ghweifat, and the east is connected to Oman through Al Ain.
The line spans the UAE, connecting Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai. Then it extends to the northern emirates and Fujairah.
The second phase extends from the Saudi Arabian border of Ghuweifat, connecting the UAE through Abu Dhabi, Khalifa Port, Kizad, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Jebel Ali Port, Sharjah and Fujairah on the east coast of the UAE.
