Ethiopia orders the expulsion of 7 senior UN officials on the grounds of “interference” | UN News

[ad_1]

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the seven people, including individuals from UNICEF and OCHA, had been declared “unwelcome persons” and were allowed to leave the country within 72 hours.

The Ethiopian government has ordered the deportation of seven senior UN officials for “interference” in their internal affairs.

Seven people, including those from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), have been declared “unwelcome persons” and have been given the right to leave the country for 72 hours. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.

Grant Leaity, Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and Adele Khodr, UNICEF’s representative in Ethiopia, were deported. Kwesi Sansculotte, Saeed Moahmoud Hersi, Ghada Eltahir Midawi and Marcy Vigoda of OCHA were also ordered to leave with Sonny Onyegbula of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

This is because humanitarian workers have been warning about restricted access to the troubled Tigray area, which has been plagued by conflict for nearly 11 months.
