UAE Raises Concerns Over Surge in Antisemitism and Islamophobia Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

In a compelling address to the United Nations Security Council, Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the UN, voiced deep concerns about the surge in antisemitism and Islamophobia globally, attributing it to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Normalization of Hate Speech and Dehumanization

Nusseibeh emphasized the profound impact of Hamas’ October 7th attack on Israel and subsequent retaliatory strikes, leading to widespread grief and horror. She highlighted the alarming normalization of hate speech and dehumanization on social media and in the real world, calling attention to the urgent need to address the escalating tensions.

Rising Prejudice Documented by Civil Rights Groups

Reports from U.S.-based Arab and Jewish civil rights groups have documented an increase in prejudice and hate against Muslims and Jews, underscoring the global repercussions of the conflict. Nusseibeh stressed that the consequences of the conflict extend beyond the Gaza Strip, posing a threat to global stability.

Humanitarian Concerns and Urgent Ceasefire: Antisemitism

Addressing the UN as an agreement was announced to release hostages held by Hamas, Nusseibeh expressed hope for a truce extension. She urged the UN Security Council to utilize every available tool to resolve the crisis and called for collective efforts to prevent further tragedy.

Humanitarian Impact and Violations of International Law

Detailing the scale of the Israel-Hamas war, Nusseibeh described the densely populated Gaza City, comparing it to New York. She emphasized the devastating impact on families, citing over 12,000 locations hit, including schools and hospitals, and highlighted the violation of international humanitarian law.

UAE’s Call for Humanitarian Access and Long-Term Resolution

The UAE reiterated its call for humanitarian access throughout Gaza, rejecting any linkage to hostage negotiations. Nusseibeh called for the implementation of Security Council resolutions advocating for humanitarian pauses and corridors. She emphasized the need for prioritizing efforts to stop the violence and working towards a long-term resolution to ensure security and stability for both Palestinians and Israelis.

In conclusion, Nusseibeh urged a reconsideration of choices by Israel and Hamas, emphasizing the significance of a peaceful future for Palestinian and Israeli women and children.
