Rail Services In a recent announcement, Etihad Rail and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) have revealed plans to establish railway services connecting Abu Dhabi city and Al Dhannah in Al Dhafra. The agreement solidifies the partnership between Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE National Rail Network, and Adnoc. Al Dhannah, situated approximately 250km west of Abu Dhabi, will benefit from this new rail link, enabling efficient travel for Adnoc employees between the capital city and Al Dhannah in the future.

Al Dhannah, with its population of 29,000 residents, underwent significant transformation starting in the 1970s when it was chosen as the site to accommodate the industrial staff population of Adnoc. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Office of Development and Martyrs Families Affairs at the Presidential Court, highlighted the partnership’s significance in realizing Etihad Rail’s vision of providing world-class passenger experiences. Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Managing Director and Group CEO of Adnoc, emphasized Adnoc’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions and infrastructure development projects in the UAE. This collaboration is part of Adnoc’s broader efforts to explore opportunities, strengthen partnerships, and implement solutions that accelerate emissions reduction, contributing to the Net Zero by 2045 target.
Future Prospects
The successful implementation of this railway link project showcases opportunities for other companies to explore similar partnerships. Etihad Rail is actively advancing the development of its passenger services, with recent financial agreements supporting this progress. The rail passenger service, announced in 2021, aims to connect 11 cities, offering top speeds of 200kmph. By 2030, the network is projected to cater to 36.5 million passengers annually, providing efficient travel options between cities in the UAE.
