If you remember, we reported on Bruce Beach in April because it attracted attention and caused controversy in the predominantly white city of Manhattan Beach. According to reports, there are less than 1% of black residents in the area. The reason for the concern is that on Thursday, Governor Newsom spoke to the crowd on the land, confirming that the city had taken the land due to racism and false and illegal excuses. By passing Bill 796, he decided to correct his mistakes.
Bill 796, unanimously passed by the state legislature this month, includes an emergency clause that will allow Los Angeles County, which currently owns the property, to immediately begin the process of land transfer. The legislation declares that “The land that Manhattan Beach was mistakenly taken from Willa and Charles Bruce should be returned to their surviving generations. This is in the public interest of Los Angeles County, California, and the people of Manhattan Beach and California do so. .”
With Bruce Beach now returned to its rightful owner, the actions proposed by Governor Newsom may initiate possible compensation. “I really believe this can act as a catalyst,” Governor Newsom said. “What we are doing here today can be done and copied anywhere else. There is an old adage: Once the mind is stretched, it will never return to its original state.”
