UN peacekeepers killed in explosion in Mali’s troubled north | News

Four other members of the United Nations delegation were injured in an attack that occurred near the country’s border with Algeria.

The United Nations said that in the turbulent north of Mali near the Algerian border, one peacekeeper was killed and four others were seriously injured when an improvised explosive device exploded.

MINUSMA’s UN peacekeeping mission in Mali stated on Saturday: “One of our teams hit an improvised explosive device near Tessalit near the Algerian border, causing one death and three serious injuries.”

“This incident is a sad reminder that our peacekeepers are facing permanent dangers and sacrifices made for peace in Mali,” Manusma chief El-Ghassim Wane said in a statement.

“Today’s cowardly attack will only strengthen the determination of MINUSMA to support Mali and its people in seeking peace and stability,” he said.

In April, four Chadian peacekeepers from MINUSMA were killed in an attack on the Argyllok camp, also located in northeastern Mali.

The UN mission has deployed more than 13,000 soldiers to curb violence by armed groups in the northern and central parts of the country.

Since 2013, it has recorded approximately 255 deaths, making it one of the deadliest missions among the more than ten UN peacekeeping missions.

In recent years, armed fighters associated with Al-Qaida and Islamic State (ISIS) have intensified their activities in the Sahel region of Africa, resulting in the displacement of thousands of people.
