The ceremony included political parties, the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni Minawi, and Jibril Ibrahim’s Justice and Equality Movement.
Several political factions, including former rebel groups, announced the formation of a coalition independent of Sudan’s main civilian groups. This is the latest sign of the division that undermines the country’s transition.
The announcement came at a ceremony in Khartoum on Saturday as Sudan was freed from the divisions within the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC). The coalition took the lead in launching protests and ousted the president in April 2019. Mar Bashir.
Since August 2019, Sudan has been managed by military generals and civilian personnel from the FFC, and has experienced a difficult transition marked by economic difficulties.
Disagreements within the FFC have deepened in recent months, and support for the transitional government led by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has been largely weakened by a series of difficult economic reforms.
Saturday’s ceremony included political parties and the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) faction led by Mini Minawi and Jibril Ibrahim’s Justice and Equality Movement (JEM).
“We want a united FFC,” Minawi said at the ceremony.
“We urge those who pretend to be from the FFC to sit next to us and listen to us,” he added, speaking to the chairman of the Sudan Sovereignty Council Abdul Fatah Burhan and the prime minister.
Hamdock did not attend Saturday’s ceremony.
In early September, he also called for unity at the signing ceremony of other faction alliances within the FFC, calling this a “step in the right direction.”
Neither Minawi nor Ibrahim participated in the signing.
In October last year, the Minawi SLM faction and Ibrahim’s Justice Movement were among the rebel groups that signed a peace agreement with the government to end the long conflict under the leadership of Bashir.
Minawi was appointed governor of the war-torn Darfur region in western Sudan in May, while Ibrahim was appointed finance minister in February last year.

The country has been grappling with protests in eastern Sudan by the main tribes opposed to the October peace agreement.
Protests have also erupted in major cities including Khartoum, condemning military coup attempts and calling for literati rule.
