Cyclone Shaheen approaches Oman | Weather News

Residents urged evacuation from coastal areas, and authorities postponed flights to and from the capital Muscat.

Tropical cyclone Shaheen is hitting Oman, prompting authorities to postpone flights to and from the capital and urging residents to evacuate coastal areas.

According to the National News Agency, one child who was washed away by the water was found dead and another was missing.

On Sunday, the center of the storm was approaching the capital Muscat, surrounded by headwinds of approximately 139 km/h (86 mph).

The country’s Meteorological Bureau issued a statement on Sunday that the cyclone is expected to “directly affect northern Batina, Dakhila, Briimi and Dakhlia.”

According to Al Jazeera’s weather expert Jeff Harrington, one of the biggest risks posed by the cyclone is that in Oman’s desert climate, “the ground is extremely dry and cannot absorb rain.”

“The second part is that this is a mountainous area, so it means rainwater is pouring down from a height…so the combination of the two will lead to a high risk of flooding,” he added.

The center of the storm is expected to hit in the late afternoon and evening, bringing very heavy winds and heavy rain, but the periphery of the system has been felt.

The National Emergency Committee stated that al-Qurm, east of the capital, will cut off the power supply to avoid accidents. More than 2,700 people were placed in emergency shelters.

Most of the 5 million people of this oil exporting country live in Muscat and its surrounding areas.
