Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic adviser to the President of the UAE, said that the United States’ commitment to the region is uncertain and worried about Beijing.
A senior official said that the United Arab Emirates is trying to manage long-term competition with Iran and Turkey through dialogue to avoid any new confrontations in the region as the Gulf countries hone their economies after COVID-19.
Anwar Gargash, a diplomatic adviser to the UAE President, said at a meeting on Saturday that the United States was uncertain about its commitment to the region and worried about an “imminent cold war” between Washington and Beijing.
The Gulf countries that have close economic ties with China also rely heavily on the U.S. military umbrella and pay close attention to negotiations between global powers and Iran to restore vitality. The 2015 nuclear agreement, And the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan after the U.S. withdrawal.
“We will really see the footprint of the United States in the region for some time to come. I don’t think we know yet, but Afghanistan is definitely a test, and honestly it is a very worrying test,” Gagash said.
“Part of the work we need to do is to better manage our region. There is a vacuum, and as long as there is a vacuum, there will be trouble,” he said at the World Policy Conference.
The UAE has eased tensions through contacts with non-Arab countries Iran and Turkey, and their influence has shifted to conflicts in Yemen, Libya, and other parts of the Middle East and North Africa.
The UAE and Saudi Arabia stated that the 2015 nuclear agreement was flawed because it did not address Iran’s missile program and regional agency network. The UAE has also begun to crack down on organizations that the Gulf states consider to pose a threat to its dynasty rule system.

Gargas said that the pandemic puts non-political priorities first, and the main problem now is to be caught between the two. U.S. and China.
