The Abu Dhabi Ministry of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) commemorated World Teachers’ Day in 2021, commemorating the dedication and contribution of three outstanding teachers to teachers, and launched two new initiatives aimed at enhancing the capabilities of industry professionals.
Principals from private and charter schools are invited to submit nominations for their outstanding teachers. The submitted works go through a rigorous selection process, and the ADEK jury selects the top three. The judging criteria explored how teachers have a significant impact on their classroom and student learning outcomes, what is the difference between them and their peers, and how they have an organizational impact. The winners were surprised by their school. They received recommendation letters, awards ceremony and trophies from students.
Speaking of World Teachers’ Day, His Excellency Sara Musallam said: “Today, we pay tribute to all teachers in Abu Dhabi and thank you for your hard work, dedication and enthusiasm. We recognize that we must have a world-class education Ecosystem, we need world-class educators, and the award-winning teachers we celebrate on World Teachers’ Day embody the highest standards of professionalism in the industry. They have a real life-changing impact on students and school communities, and have inspired countless young people , Become a role model and mentor.”
The winner of this year’s 2021 World Teacher’s Day Award is Gems World Academy’s head teacher Rebecca Vasconcelos, who was selected for his outstanding professionalism, dedication, contribution and enthusiasm; Michele Pienaar, Abu Dhabi International Private School No. 1 Science Teacher; and Santhi Gopinathan, subject supervisor and computer science teacher at the Indian School of Abu Dhabi No. 1 branch.
Rebecca Vasconcelos, head teacher of Gems World Academy, said: “I am very honored to be nominated and win this award. A meaningful life experience for the students and the learning community. This is an extraordinary achievement and I will always consider this to be the highlight of my career.”
Michele Pienaar, a science teacher at the 1st branch of Abu Dhabi International Private School, commented; “A great teacher is a passionate and compassionate person who knows balance and how to innovate. I want to thank my past and present students for letting I easily fall in love with my job.”
Santhi Gopinathan, the subject supervisor and computer science teacher of Abu Dhabi Indian School No. 1, said: “As teachers, we should be patient and knowledgeable, because no student is the same, we should always encourage our students to face the world. Yes. Enthusiasm for this profession is very important, but it cannot be regarded as just a job. I want to thank all the faculty, staff and students for their support. Without them, I would not have won this award.”
The prizes for the winners include a business Etihad Airways round-trip ticket to their chosen destination, flowers and a thank you trophy.
To further commemorate this moment, ADEK opened a dedicated teacher hotline, a direct communication channel for teachers of Abu Dhabi private and charter schools to share their suggestions and opinions, answer questions, and express any concerns they may have.
At the same time, ADEK released “Welcome to your new home”-a guide designed for industry professionals who join UAE schools to help them navigate their new life and become familiar with ADEK and Abu Dhabi’s educational ecosystem. To further help new employees immerse themselves in the various leisure and cultural attractions that Abu Dhabi offers, the guide also comes with artist coupons to allow them to explore their new home.
