Noel Formica: Good morning, and thank you for having me. I’ve always been fascinated by the beauty of diverse cultures. I began my career as an interior designer in Italy, where art and design are part of everyday life. But I felt the urge to explore new realities. The Middle East gave me the chance to experience a completely different style, rich in traditions, and I saw an opportunity to connect these two worlds.
UAE Times: How do you balance the aesthetic and cultural differences between these two regions?
Noel Formica: It’s a fascinating challenge. Italy taught me the importance of craftsmanship and high-quality materials, while the Middle East introduced me to symbolism and bold use of color. The key is finding common ground while respecting each project’s cultural essence. For example, in a residential project in Dubai, I combined Carrara marble with intricate patterns inspired by Islamic architecture.
UAE Times: Your work involves not only interior design but also project management as a general contractor. How do you handle this responsibility?
Noel Formica: Being both an interior designer and a general contractor requires a balance of creativity and practicality. My goal is always to ensure the creative vision comes to life without compromises, while staying on budget and on schedule. This means coordinating multidisciplinary teams, suppliers, and workers—often from different backgrounds—each with their own cultural dynamics.
UAE Times: Have you noticed differences in how living spaces are designed in Italy versus the Middle East?
Noel Formica: Absolutely. In Italy, homes are often intimate spaces designed for a cozy, family-oriented lifestyle. In the Middle East, there is a strong focus on hospitality—houses tend to be larger, with dedicated areas for entertaining guests. This changes the approach to design but also offers opportunities to create spaces that blend functionality with a sense of welcome.
UAE Times: Your career seems to reflect a philosophy of cultural fusion. How important is this aspect to you?
Noel Formica: It’s essential to me. I believe design is a universal language that can break down cultural barriers. Every project is an opportunity to build bridges between traditions, aesthetics, and values from different countries. When an Arab client appreciates the elegance of Italian design, or an Italian client is drawn to a Middle Eastern motif, I know I’ve created something meaningful.
UAE Times: Could you share a project that had a particular impact on you?
Noel Formica: Certainly. A renovation project of the facades of a luxury mall in Jeddah had a significant impact on me. I aimed to fuse the history of Arab architecture, preserving parts of the structure made with coral bricks from the Red Sea, with Italian innovation. The front was covered with custom-designed aluminum flakes, anodized in a soft gold color, to create a dynamic effect, symbolizing the wind moving through the sand of the Arabian desert. It was a beautiful blend of tradition and modernity.
UAE Times: How do you handle language and cultural differences when working in such diverse environments?
Noel Formica: Communication is crucial, but even more important is the ability to listen. I speak several languages, which helps, but truly understanding my clients and collaborators is key. Every client and craftsman has a story to tell, and I strive to understand what they want to express through their space. My team, which includes local professionals, also ensures that each project is culturally respectful and authentic.
UAE Times: Where do you find inspiration for your projects?
Noel Formica: I travel a lot, and traveling is my greatest source of inspiration. Markets, ancient and modern architecture, and the little details of everyday life inspire me. Additionally, my continuous research into materials, processes, and technologies allows me to offer innovative solutions for even the most extravagant and ambitious ideas.
UAE Times: What are your plans for the future?
Noel Formica: I want to keep developing projects that blend different aesthetics. If possible, I’d like to create a platform that promotes knowledge exchange between young Italian and Middle Eastern designers. I believe in the power of collaboration, and I think the future of design lies in cultural cross-pollination.
UAE Times: One last question: what advice would you give to a young designer aiming for an international career?
Noel Formica: I’d say, be curious and open-minded. Embrace different visions and perspectives. Don’t stop at the surface—immerse yourself in different cultures, respect the differences, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Every project is a lesson and an opportunity to grow. Most importantly, remember that design serves people: by creating harmony in spaces, we can bring the world closer together.
