Tourists are also invited to board the largest passenger elevator in the world.

For students exploring the World Expo, the time and space journey of the “Alif” Pavilion is one of the most attractive activities.

The three-wing Alif-The Mobility Pavilion leads young tourists on a voyage from thousands of years ago to the present and the future—from the ancient trade era; the world-famous Ibn Battuta’s Travel; to explore Mars and beyond.

Students must discover how people, goods, ideas, and data move and interact across generations.

“Alif”-also the first letter of the Arabic alphabet-pays tribute to the beginning of human progress and how the UAE and the Arab world have played a key role in advancing development.

The mobile experience started 4,500 years ago in Saruq Al Hadid, a settlement in the Dubai desert. Visitors are then invited to board the largest lifting platform in the world and transport them to the Wisdom House in Baghdad in the 9th century.

Salamah Mohammed Seed, a student at Al Dhait Girls’ Middle School, said: “It presents the story of global mobility in an immersive and inspiring way. I like everything in that pavilion. I am especially in awe of the tall and realistic figures of the golden age of Arab civilization. I also know something about the famous explorer Ibn Battuta and his innovations.”

The stories of historical giants are used to explore the concept of mobility and its far-reaching impact. It also showcased further innovations from the Arab region.

Another student said: “I like the prototype of the Hope probe and the miniature version of the UAE Space Agency displayed on the screen. I am very interested in space and have been following it since the launch of the UAE mission to Mars.”

The display is divided into three key areas, and each area forms a petal in the three-foil plane.

Visitors can directly enter the central core area, which has the world’s largest passenger elevator and can accommodate more than 160 people. However, due to social distancing restrictions, only 38 people are currently allowed to board the plane.

The Alif Pavilion was designed by the award-winning British company Foster + Partners. The UAE Space Agency and Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center provided key content for the internal space segment.

Marjan Faraidooni, Chief Experience Officer of Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “The Mobility Pavilion will take visitors on a journey of discovery, allowing them to explore new horizons and discover how connections and development of new technologies can become the foundation of human progress.”

The pavilion and its grounds have a 330-meter track partly underground and partly open-air, with an amphitheater and a second stage next to it.

The square around the building is hosting mobile-related performances, activities, seminars and demonstrations.

“We are proud that this must-see pavilion celebrates the Arab world as a leader in inter-generational mobility and has changed the perception of achievements in the region. We hope that tourists, especially young Arabs, will be inspired -Realizing that everything is possible,” Faradoni added.
