In a telephone interview on Wednesday, Sarah Al Amiri, who is also the Minister of State for Advanced Technologies, stated that the project is currently in the “mission concept” stage.

“This is the first stage of the development of any space mission. At the end of the mission concept sprint, we hope to finalize… the scientific goals and the technical demonstrators on board,” she said.

She added that the team’s work is “in progress” to meet the seven-year development timeline and is ready to launch in early 2028.

Does the task still have a name?

“The United States will launch a mission called Lucy Mission next week. The mission will go to a Trojan asteroid located around Jupiter’s orbit… So what we are trying to find… is… science that will complement other missions.

The Director of the UAE Space Agency added: “We can now discuss this matter with more people and make sure that we use the right expertise to choose the final asteroid we will land on.”

But why is it an asteroid?

Al Amiri explained: “The asteroid belt is located between Mars and Jupiter. The reason why planets are not formed in this area is due to the strong gravitational pull of Jupiter. Therefore, it can give you an idea of ​​some planets and their constituent parts.”

The orbit of the UAE spacecraft around Venus will reach a distance of 109 million kilometers from the sun, requiring a lot of thermal protection. But then it will also be 448 million kilometers away from the sun, so the team will have to use “very little solar energy” to run it.

The mission is indeed very challenging, but the team will build on the experience gained through the Mars rover.

“Because we will experience a lot of heat, we must change our thermal control system. We must re-examine our electrical system; our solar panels on the spacecraft; the navigation mechanism.

“What actually happened is that we were orbiting the sun in different elliptical orbits, flying over Venus and using…its gravity. We will also use the earth’s gravity…to approach the asteroid belt.”

Start task

The team will start with the spacecraft.

“We continue to define what the requirements are and what each part of this very complex system looks like. Then we start the initial design and manufacture of the initial product. Of course, these are not ready for flight.

“We will test these and then start our final phase, where we begin to receive flight-ready components. We will assemble, integrate and test. Each piece will take about one to two years,” Al Amiri explained .

The UAE is seeking to improve the capabilities of its aerospace industry. “As we move forward, several plans will come into play so that we can build a very strong aerospace industry in the country,” Al Amiri said.

“We are still defining… which part of the mission is related to supporting local businesses and developing their capabilities.”

She said that the aerospace sector involves a number of international cooperation.

“You will never develop a spacecraft 100% in one place. Due to its complexity, the development of such missions involves multiple levels of components, technology, and expertise,” she said.
