UAE’s Bold Leap into Autonomous Middle-Mile Cargo with New Aircraft
The United Arab Emirates is pioneering the future of logistics with a groundbreaking autonomous cargo aircraft designed to revolutionize middle-mile delivery. Developed by Abu Dhabi-based LODD Autonomous, the ‘Hili’ aircraft is a hybrid-electric, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone capable of carrying hundreds of kilograms over hundreds of kilometers, targeting a critical gap in global supply chains.
Solving the ‘Middle-Mile’ Challenge
The middle mile—the transport of goods between major hubs like warehouses and distribution centers—remains costly and inefficient, often reliant on traditional aircraft and airport infrastructure. Hili is designed to bypass these limitations. As a pilotless, runway-independent aircraft, it can land closer to logistics facilities, slashing transit times and operational costs. “We wanted a faster, more efficient alternative to expensive, infrastructure-heavy air cargo,” said LODD CEO Rashid Al Manai.
Innovative Hybrid Technology
Hili’s unique hybrid propulsion system combines electric motors for vertical lift with a combustion engine for efficient cruise flight, enabling extended range without dependence on airport charging. “It doesn’t need an airport at all. It can land near a logistics facility, pick up cargo, and fly directly,” explained aerospace engineer Fatema Al Marzooqi. Advanced autonomous systems allow ground operators to manage multiple flights simultaneously, addressing pilot shortages and reducing costs.
Rapid Development and Commercial Interest
LODD achieved a remarkable feat, moving from concept to flying prototype in just 19 months. The project has already garnered significant commercial interest, with preliminary agreements for over 200 aircraft from major logistics and airline groups. Key partnerships are fueling momentum:
Etihad Cargo is exploring trials to streamline operations.
Aramex has signed agreements to integrate Hili into its Middle East middle-mile network.
Aligning with UAE’s Aerospace Ambitions
This initiative is a cornerstone of the UAE’s strategy to become a global leader in aerospace innovation and autonomous systems. By combining cutting-edge technology with supportive regulations, the UAE is positioning itself at the forefront of the next-generation logistics revolution.

The Future of Smart Logistics
While Hili undergoes final testing and certification, it represents a fundamental shift. By creating a scalable, autonomous aerial highway for goods, the UAE is not just optimizing its own supply chains but potentially setting a new global standard for efficient, flexible, and sustainable cargo transportation. This bold investment signals a future where the skies are an integral part of a smarter, more connected global logistics network.
