“In view of this, both the board of directors and I believe that the new chairman will better serve the European Central Bank in order to propel it forward after the pandemic.”

In addition, Whatmore added that he recently became a grandfather after five years of retirement from the Civil Service Commission last month.

“I now want to retire completely from work and enjoy our exciting games as a spectator,” he said.

Watermore, the former chief executive officer of the Football Association, became chairman of the European Central Bank in September 2020 after Colin Graves retired.

Barry O’Brien, vice chairman of the European Central Bank, will take over during the transition period, as the board of directors said it will soon begin the process of appointing a new president.

Pakistan dispute

Last month, the European Central Bank cancelled the men’s and women’s team’s white ball trip to Pakistan originally scheduled for this month, citing “increasing concerns about travel to the region” and player welfare.

A few days ago, New Zealand also withdrew from its visit to the country for security reasons.

Pakistan accused India of sending threatening emails from an anonymous person, causing New Zealand to abandon its first cricket tour in Pakistan in 18 years.

The decision to cancel the England men’s team’s first trip to Pakistan since 2005 caused a fierce response in the South Asian country.
