18 former NBA players arrested on suspicion of fraudulent NBA health benefits program

[ad_1]

It seems that a dozen former NBA players have found themselves in some trouble after being accused of cheating on the NBA’s health and welfare program.

according to NBC News, These 18 players were accused of defrauding nearly 4 million U.S. dollars from the league’s health plan. Among those accused, they face charges of conspiracy to commit health care and wire fraud.

Former players include Shannon Brown, Terrence Williams, Alan Anderson, Ronald Glenn “Big Baby” Davis, Christopher Douglas-Roberts, Melvin Ely, Jamario Moon, Darius Miles, Milton Palacio, Ruben Patterson, Eddie Robinson, Gregory Smith, Sebastian Telfair, Charles Watson Jr., Anto Wan Wright, Anthony Rothen, Anthony Allen and his wife Desiree Allen.

U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said: “The defendant’s script involves fraud and deception. They will have to be held responsible for blatant violations of the law.”

Federal prosecutors from New York said Terrence Williams, who played four years in the NBA, made false claims about the NBA’s health care plan. Allegedly, he would submit false invoices reflecting false claims in order to receive a rebate totaling at least US$230,000.

Allegedly, the former player submitted at least US$3.9 million in false claims and paid US$2.5 million.

Strauss alleges that Gregory Smith filed a claim for intravenous sedation, root canal treatment and dental crowns on December 20, 2018. However, records show that he was playing basketball overseas. Strauss said: “Travel records, emails and public scores show that he played professional basketball in Taiwan that week.” “And he did not receive root canal treatment in Beverly Hills as in the claim form he submitted.”

The authorities said that due to the “defendant’s carelessness”, the health care plan was finally exposed.
