New DP World Terminal in Fujairah Avoids Hormuz Route
DP World is building a new route around one of the world’s most watched shipping choke points. The company signed a 50-year deal with the Fujairah Ports Authority to build two terminals on the UAE’s east coast, letting cargo skip the Strait of Hormuz altogether.
The new DP World Fujairah terminal project covers two sites: a container and general cargo terminal called Al Rugaylat, and a second one named Dibba.
Together they will lift DP World’s UAE handling capacity from 19.4 million containers a year to almost 22 million. Ships heading through Hormuz have faced delays since fighting broke out between the US and Iran earlier this year.
Many vessels have rerouted, and importers have leaned on trucks and trains to keep goods moving. The Fujairah site sits on the Gulf of Oman, so ships can reach it without entering the Gulf at all.
The terminals will connect to DP World’s flagship Jebel Ali port and the Jafza free zone through inland roads and rail links. Construction is expected to take up to 30 months, part of a long-term bet on the UAE’s role as a global trade hub.
