US President’s Special Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, led world leaders and well-known environmental policy makers to congratulate the UAE on its 2050 net-zero strategy initiative, calling it a “very important” step in addressing climate change.

The UAE is the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to commit to such an initiative. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Chief of Dubai, announced this commitment at Expo 2020, saying: “We are committed to seizing the opportunity to consolidate our Leadership in climate change. Within our region, and use this key economic opportunity to drive development, growth and new jobs as we move our economy and the country to net zero.”
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, also expressed his delight on the UAE’s commitment on Twitter: “I welcome the United Arab Emirates’ announcement of its intention to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. I look forward to the UAE’s new submission Climate Action Plan. This ambitious vision encourages other Gulf countries to follow this example before COP26.”
