Xi Jinping vows to “unify” Taiwan, but does not threaten conflict with force

[ad_1]

The latest announcement by the Chinese leader comes as the Taiwan Air Defense Identification Zone has repeatedly invaded, involving nearly 150 aircraft.

Chinese President Xi Jinping promised on Saturday to achieve peaceful “unification” with Taiwan. However, after a week of tension with the Taiwan Island, which China claims to own, he did not directly mention the use of force, which aroused international concern.

Democratically ruled Taiwan is under increasing military and political pressure from Beijing to accept its sovereignty, but Taipei has promised to defend its freedom. Only the people of Taiwan can determine their own future.

In a speech at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Xi Jinping said that the Chinese people have a “glorious tradition” of opposing separatism. China is commemorating the 110th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution of 1911.

“Taiwan independence separatism is the biggest obstacle to the reunification of the motherland and the most serious hidden danger to national rejuvenation,” he said on the revolutionary anniversary of the overthrow of the last monarchy in 1911.

Xinhua News Agency quoted him as saying: “The complete reunification of our country will and can be achieved.”

Peaceful “unification” is most in line with the overall interests of the people of Taiwan, but China will safeguard its sovereignty and unity. ,” Xi Jinping said.

His tone was slightly softer than in July. He mentioned Taiwan in his last important speech, and he vowed to “smash” any attempt to formalize independence. In 2019, he directly threatened to use force to bring the island under Beijing’s control.

In response to Xi Jinping’s statement, the Office of the President of Taiwan stated on Saturday that Taiwan’s future is in the hands of the people of Taiwan, and mainstream public opinion has very clearly rejected China’s “one country, two systems” model.

In another statement, the Taiwan Mainland Affairs Committee called on China to abandon “provocative steps of aggression, harassment and destruction.”

Repeated invasion

Since October 1, the Chinese Air Force has invaded the Taiwan Air Defense Identification Zone for four consecutive days, involving nearly 150 aircraft, but these missions have ended. Xi Jinping did not mention these flights.

Taiwan says that it is an independent country, and its official name is the Republic of China.

The Republic of China was established in 1912. After the failed civil war with the Communist Party in 1949, the government fled to Taiwan and established the People’s Republic of China today.

In President Xi’s speech not long ago, Taiwan’s Prime Minister Su Zengchang pointed out that China has been “flexing muscles” and causing regional tensions.

“That’s why countries that believe in freedom, democracy, and human rights, and based on common values, all work together to warn China against invading Taiwan.”

Taiwan has designated October 10, the day when China’s anti-imperialist revolution began, as National Day. President Tsai Ing-wen will deliver a keynote speech in Taipei on Sunday.

At the same time, according to the Taipei Times, Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) legislators urged the Taiwanese government to establish a “mechanism” for dialogue with Beijing.

TPP legislator Zhang Qilu stated that in addition to raising military expenditures, President Tsai Ing-wen “should seek other options… realistic negotiations with Beijing to reduce the risks for both parties.”

“Taiwan needs some way to deal with and coexist with our bad neighbor China, because we cannot move to another place,” he said.
