New lava river threatens more buildings in La Palma | Gallery News

[ad_1]

On Saturday, a new lava river erupted from La Palma volcano, causing more damage to the Atlantic islands, where more than 1,000 buildings have been engulfed or severely damaged by the lava flow.

Overnight, a partial collapse of the volcanic cone produced a new lava flow, which began to follow a similar path along the Cumbre Vieja ridge towards the west bank of the island to the ocean.

The authorities stated that the new lava flow was in an area hurriedly evacuated after the volcanic eruption on September 19, when 6,000 residents were forced to flee their homes and farms.

The police let residents whose houses may be in danger now travel to save what they can do. On Saturday, the truck entered the restricted area empty, leaving with mattresses, furniture and other items.

Emergency officials, Miguel Ángel Morcuende, said experts have been paying close attention to the new land delta that is forming off the coast of the island since the main lava flow flowed into the sea last week.

He said that part of it may collapse, causing explosions and huge waves, but this does not pose a danger because the nearby area has been evacuated.

According to data from the European Union’s Copernicus Emergency Management Agency, as of Saturday, a total of 1,186 buildings in La Palma were destroyed and 497 hectares (1,228 acres) were covered by lava.

La Palma Airport was reopened after being closed due to volcanic ash a few days later.

The island is part of Spain’s Canary Islands, an archipelago in northwest Africa, and a popular holiday destination for European tourists.
