Individuals and organizations in the UAE encourage donations and help eliminate neglected tropical diseases.
The “50 Days to Change 5 Million Lives” campaign has been launched to welcome the UAE’s Golden Jubilee. The campaign aims to end neglected tropical diseases. This is the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Naha Young’s promise.
People across the UAE will fulfill the promise of Sheikh Zayed, the founding father of the UAE, to end neglected tropical diseases (NTD) through major fundraising activities.
The “50 Days to Change 5 Million Lives” event will start on October 14th, as the countdown to the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the UAE begins on December 2.
This work is led by The Reach Campaign, an awareness-raising and fundraising campaign aimed at working with the UAE Red Crescent Society and some of the UAE’s largest organizations and companies to end two NTDs-river blindness and lymphatics Worm disease.
All proceeds will benefit the Last Mile Fund (RLMF), which provides a proof of concept for the elimination of these two diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. Sponsored by the END Fund, a leading charity dedicated to ending NTD, RLMF is a 10-year, US$100 million project run by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zaye, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE His Royal Highness de Al Nahyan launched the armed forces in 2017 and is supported by multiple organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the ELMA Charitable Foundation.
RLMF provides preventive treatments for neglected tropical diseases and focuses on ways to accelerate the progression of the elimination of diseases-from investing in disease mapping work to supporting advanced laboratory facilities and cross-border cooperation.
The 50-day event aims to raise funds to support these activities and ultimately help protect at least 5 million people from river blindness and lymphatic filariasis.

Organizations that will work with Reach to achieve its fundraising goals include strategic partners, the Emirates Red Crescent; founding partners, ADNOC, Etihad Airways, Lulu Group International and National Health Insurance Company-Daman; and marketing partners , ADCB and Rivoli Group, and 18 other major organizations.
A series of fundraising plans will be announced in the next 50 days, including personal fundraising challenges, employee donations, cooking and retail promotions, text message donations, global sweepstakes, and once-in-a-lifetime experience auctions.
River blindness and lymphatic filariasis disproportionately affect the world’s poorest people. More than 200 million people worldwide need treatment for river blindness, which is one of the main causes of preventable blindness, and more than 850 million people are at risk of developing lymphatic filariasis.
