Eleven days after birth, Adel needed surgery because there was a hole in his small intestine.
Doctors in Abu Dhabi saved the life of a baby born at 23 weeks of pregnancy.
At birth, the newborn weighed only 600 grams and lived in the neonatal intensive care unit (Nicu) for more than five months, to be precise, 160 days.
The brave baby boy Adel underwent two surgical operations. When he was discharged from the Danat Amarat Women and Children’s Hospital, he weighed 3.88 kg and was in good health.

His proud Jordanian parents were emotional. When Adel’s mother Taqwa Jamal talked about her child’s days in Nicu, tears rolled down.
“The fact that Adel has left Nikko now is Allah’s greatest gift. There is nothing to describe how I feel now. Thank Allah, we have reached this stage. We have waited for him for so long. I have waited for five months. A day is very difficult for me.”
Taqwa said that she reached an agreement with her child, and little Adel did not destroy it.
“We promised each other on the first day that we would leave Niku together. He promised me, we did it together, we did it.”
Dr. Duaa Al Masri, a consultant neonatologist and one of the neonatologists who care for Adel, said: “Adel was born on March 20th through a natural vaginal delivery on the first day of the 23rd week of pregnancy. This is one of the very rare cases. .. According to international research, the survival rate of children born in the 23rd week is between 10% and 30%, but we still have hope.”
In the neonatal intensive care unit, a series of medical procedures including cardiopulmonary resuscitation were performed.
“He was placed on a mechanical ventilator and received intravenous nutrition. 11 days after birth, Adel needed surgical intervention because there was a hole in his small intestine. Despite antibiotics and other medications, his condition did not improve. Surgery to remove part of the damaged intestine and create an opening…change the path of food to the outside. This is done to allow time for the intestine to heal and to prepare Adel for the second corrective surgery.”
Two months later, the pediatric surgery team performed a second operation, which blocked the hole and corrected the position of the intestines.
“We work closely with different subspecialties to provide comprehensive care for our babies. This includes our pediatric surgeons who specialize in neonatal surgery.”
Dr. Al Masri pointed out that Adel’s condition has gradually improved.
“He lived with us for 160 days and was only recently allowed to be discharged from the hospital. He and his family came to see us a few days ago. Thank Allah, we are very happy to see him in good health.”
The hospital’s CEO Dr. Mohaymen Abdelghany praised the unremitting efforts of doctors and nurses.
“In the past five years alone, Nicu at Danat Al Emarat Hospital has successfully treated more than 130 premature babies born before completing 27 weeks of gestation. Today, we are celebrating the youngest premature baby born at 23 weeks.”
Chief Medical Officer and Consultant of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Sadoon Sami Sadoon pointed out that the case of Baby Adel is another milestone in the hospital’s achievements.
Dr. Sridhar Kalyanasundaram, head of the Department of Neonatology, said: “Studies have shown that nearly 8-10% of births occur before 37 weeks of pregnancy (premature birth), and about 1.5-2% of births occur before 29 weeks (very premature birth). This is why Our hospital has an excellent grade III NICU dedicated to managing these premature babies.”
Adel’s father Samer Abu Snaineh expressed his gratitude to the hospital.
“We are very happy to go home with Adel. It is really the best reward to see my wife holding him. The past time has not been easy for both of us. We used to go to Niku every day. We Inseparable from Adel, we have established a special bond with the Niku team. They are all our family.”
