Winter Olympics: The International Olympic Committee says Chinese human rights are “out of” its mandate | Winter Olympics News

[ad_1]

The International Olympic Committee rejected calls to question China’s treatment of Uighur minorities before the Beijing Winter Olympics next year.

A senior member of the International Olympic Committee rejected the suggestion that China should challenge its human rights record before the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The Vice President of the International Olympic Committee, John Coates, on Wednesday rejected calls from human rights organizations and US lawmakers to ask the International Olympic Committee to postpone next year’s games and reschedule the games unless China ends what the United States believes. Continuing genocide Oppose Uighurs and other Muslim minorities.

When asked about the treatment of the Uyghur minority in China, he said that the agency has no right to take action.

“We are not a world government. We must respect the sovereignty of the country hosting the Olympics,” Coates said at an event in his hometown of Australia.

Human rights groups believe that at least 1 million Uighurs and other members of the Muslim minority in northwestern Xinjiang have been imprisoned. China denies wrongdoing, saying it has set up vocational training centers to combat “extremism.”

Beijing has also been accused of abusing human rights in Hong Kong.

The International Olympic Committee and its members choose who to host the Olympics and help hold the events. The organization has portrayed itself as the “guardian” of the Olympics, aiming to “build a better world through sports.”

“The International Olympic Committee really attaches great importance to human rights,” Coates told reporters at a media conference.

“I know this is a very important part of the basic principles of Olympism, that is, the basic principles stipulated in the Olympic Charter.

“The responsibility of the International Olympic Committee is to ensure that there are no violations of human rights when the Olympic Games are held within the National Olympic Committee or the Olympic Movement.

“We don’t have the ability to enter a country and tell them what to do. All we can do is to award the Olympic Games to a country under the conditions stipulated in the host contract… and then make sure they are complied with.”

U.S. and China trade allegations

The Beijing Winter Olympics will be held in February next year, but there have been calls on sponsors and others to boycott the Olympics or find ways to protest the human rights situation in China.

The U.S. Congress questioned five major sponsors, including Visa and Airbnb, accusing them of supporting the alleged genocide of the Muslim minority in Xinjiang.

In response, Beijing accused American politicians of “politicizing sports” and slandered China.

Jules Boykov, a former Olympic athlete, writer and political science professor at the University of the Pacific, told Al Jazeera that Coates’ remarks on Wednesday exposed the selective ethics of the International Olympic Committee.

“On the one hand, it is an all-powerful entity that can choose where to place the game. On the other hand, it behaves as if it can’t do anything,” Boykov said.

“reason [for this] It’s money. They need to let this money flow into the Olympic treasury. “
