The Kenya Athletics Association said on Wednesday that long-distance runner Agnes Tirop, a bronze medalist at the Kenyan two-time World Championships, was found stabbed to death at home.
The 25-year-old athlete represented Kenya in the 5,000m event of the Tokyo Olympics and finished fourth in the final after timing at 14:39.62.
“It is reported that Tirop was found dead in their home in Iten after being stabbed by her husband. We are still working to find out more details about her death,” the Kenya Athletics Association said in a statement.
Last month, Tirop broke the women’s world record of 10 kilometers in Germany and crossed the finish line in 30 minutes and 01 seconds, which was better than that held by Morocco’s Asmae Leghzaoui in 2002. The record has been shortened by 28 seconds.
Tirop won the bronze medal in the 10,000m event at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships, and also won the 2015 World Cross Country Championships.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said in a statement: “What’s more distressing is that the Kenyan hero Agnes was painfully lost due to the long-standing criminal behavior of selfish and cowardly people. Young life.”
“I urge our law enforcement agencies led by the National Police to track down and arrest the criminals responsible for the killing of Agnes.”
