26 experts form a new scientific advisory group, some of whom have participated in the Wuhan survey
The World Health Organization proposed on Wednesday that 26 experts form a new scientific advisory group on the origin of the new pathogen, including several experts who had been on mission in Wuhan, China, to investigate the source of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
The statement listed 26 proposed members before the two-week public consultation period, including Marion Koopmans, Thea Fischer, Hung Nguyen, and Chinese animal health expert Yang Yungui who participated in the joint survey this year.
“Understanding the source of new pathogens is essential to prevent future outbreaks with pandemic and pandemic potential and requires extensive expertise. We are very satisfied with the talents of experts selected for SAGO from all over the world,” the WHO Director Director Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement.
The WHO initiated an application request in August last year, saying that it is looking for the greatest scientific minds to provide advice on investigating new high-threat pathogens that spread from animals to humans and may trigger the next pandemic.
