The 450 kg (990 lb) cargo was found in a ceramic tile shipping container sent from Malaysia.
Australian police said they seized the largest heroin consignment found in the country to date, with an estimated value of 140 million Australian dollars (104 million U.S. dollars), and arrested a Malaysian national on charges of importing the illegal drug.
The police said in a statement on Saturday that the 450 kg (990 lb) shipment-as heavy as a grand piano-was found in a tiled shipping container sent from Malaysia to a company in Melbourne.
The police did not disclose the name of the arrested man, which is a typical practice in Australia unless the police believe that the identity of the suspect is determined for the benefit of the victim’s family or the public.
The man was charged with importing and attempting to possess commercial quantities of border controlled drugs. The police stated that the maximum penalty is life imprisonment.
The Australian Federal Police Southern Command Commissioner Krissy Barrett said that the Australian Federal Police is cooperating with the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP).
Barrett said in a statement: “We will continue to work together to identify and combat transnational organized criminal groups that try to harm our two countries and make millions of dollars in profits from criminal activities.”
The police believe that interception of heroin saved 225 lives. According to their estimates, every 2 kg (4.4 lb) of heroin consumed in the Australian community will cause 1 death.
