The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the deadly mosque attack in southern Afghanistan, which killed dozens of people in a mosque.

Suicide bombers attacked a mosque in Kandahar province crowded with worshippers attending Friday prayers. Caused at least 47 deaths and 70 injuries, The Turkish public broadcaster TRT reports.

The attack follows several other recent attacks against religious institutions in Afghanistan, including last week’s attack The Gozar-e-Sayed Abad Mosque in Kunduz.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) strongly condemned the “horrible terrorist attack” against the Imam Bargah-e-Fatima Mosque and emphasized the need to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In a statement issued by the United Nations Security Council, members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a complete recovery as soon as possible.

The members of the Council reiterated that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.

The statement said: “The members of the Security Council emphasize the need to hold accountable the perpetrators, organizers, funders and sponsors of these condemned terrorist acts, and bring them to justice.” They urged all countries to comply with international law and the Security Council. Obligations under the resolution to actively cooperate with all relevant authorities in this regard.

The members of the Council reiterated that any terrorist act is criminal and indefensible, regardless of its motive, when, where, and by whom.

The United States also condemned the recent suicide attack on a mosque in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, and expressed condolences to the victims and their families.

“We strongly condemn today’s attack on the Kandahar Mosque, which is the third such attack this month, and express our condolences to the victims and their families. The Afghan people have the right to live and worship in a peaceful and safe environment, regardless of Which religion or belief they choose,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in a tweet.
