Self-driving delivery vehicles will soon be on the road in Dubai.
In a speech on the sidelines of Gitex Global, Khalid Al Awadhi, Director of Integrated Service Transportation Systems for Autonomous Transportation and Bus Stations, said that the Chinese company Neolix will cooperate with the online market Noon.com to launch a fully automated delivery service for autonomous vehicles.
Vehicles can transport items such as packages, catering items and other similar products. It has a screen that can interact with people and verify QR codes, and people can collect their items. Fully autonomous vehicles may start operations later this month or early next month.
The Road and Transport Authority is demonstrating self-driving cars on Gitex Global in Dubai World Trade Center.
As part of RTA’s 2021 autonomous driving challenge, the vehicle has been brought to the exhibition. The winner of the challenge will be announced at the Dubai World Autonomous Transportation Conference on October 27th.
He pointed out that the vehicle can also work like a vending machine. It will contain multiple items and customers can purchase certain items. The vehicle can also reach the customer’s location. These vehicles will be deployed in the community-away from the main road, but in the pedestrian zone.
Al Awadhi stated that as part of the challenge, RTA ensures that the company prepares products in a way that suits the local market and environment.
“This is an international challenge that RTA organizes every two years. This year, it focuses on logistics delivery. We set up a category for pioneers from all over the world. We have participants from China, Taiwan, Australia, Italy, the United States and Russia. And six participants from local universities. We have shortlisted companies from six different countries. All winners will be announced on October 27,” Al Awadhi told the media on Sunday.
