The Saudi-led coalition said it killed dozens of Houthi rebels in air strikes as the warring parties fought near strategic cities.
The Saudi-led coalition supporting the Yemeni government said it killed 160 Houthi insurgents in an air strike south of the strategic city of Malibu. Supporters said the insurgents had made progress.
“We have carried out 32 attacks in Abdia in the past 24 hours,” the coalition said on Saturday, according to the state-run Saudi Press Agency, adding that “11 military vehicles were destroyed and more than 160 terrorists were wiped out.” .
The rebels rarely comment on reported losses and cannot independently verify the number of casualties.
The coalition said that since Monday, more than 700 rebels have been killed in air strikes in the Battle of Malibu.
The Houthis began to seize Malibu province in February, and after a period of calm, they have relaunched their offensive in recent weeks.
According to the United Nations immigration agency, tens of thousands of people were displaced in the province this year, and nearly 10,000 were displaced in September alone.
Abdiya is about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Malibu, which is the last foothold of the internationally recognized government in the north.
A loyal source told AFP that although the Houthis have suffered heavy losses in recent days, they are now “in the center of the Abudia region after four weeks of siege.”
The official said that the rebels “kidnapped, imprisoned and abused” Yemeni tribesmen who supported pro-government forces.
Hussein Buhiti, a political analyst allied with the Houthis, told Al Jazeera that the rebels continued to advance.
“Most of the fighters advancing to Malibu are from Malibu Province,” he said. “[The Houthis] They mainly use fighters from the areas they are about to liberate, which sends out good news.If everyone there objected [Houthis], I don’t think they can advance one meter. “
Houthi spokesman Mohamed Abdul Salam said on Twitter that the rebels are facing “factors related to Al-Qaida and the Islamic State Group, which are related to aggressive forces. [the coalition]”In Abdiye.
The coalition did not immediately comment on the allegations.
Yemen’s Minister of Information Moammar al-Eryani accused the rebels of targeting residential areas.
The United Nations this week called for a halt to the fighting in Abdiye and stated that aid operations for approximately 35,000 people have been “extremely restricted”, including 17,000 “extremely vulnerable” people who have taken refuge in conflicts in other parts of Yemen.
According to the government, there are about 139 refugee camps in Malibu province, housing about 2.2 million people, and many displaced civilians are once again caught in the line of fire.
The Yemen civil war began in 2014 when Houthis occupied the capital Sana’a, 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of Malibu, prompting Saudi-led forces to intervene in support of the government the following year.
In what the United Nations calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, tens of thousands of people died and millions were displaced.
