Fire at major oil refinery in Kuwait-News

[ad_1]

The state-owned oil company said a fire broke out at a large oil refinery in Kuwait on Monday and reported that some workers inhaled heavy smoke and other minor injuries.

The Kuwait National Petroleum Corporation stated that the fire at the important Mina Ahmadi refinery on the Arabian Gulf coastline north of the border between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia did not affect power supply or oil exports. The company added that several petroleum contractors are receiving treatment for burns at a nearby hospital.

The refinery can process 25,000 barrels of oil per day, and mainly supplies gasoline and diesel for the domestic market in Kuwait. It has recently been expanded to reduce emissions and increase its production capacity to 346,000 barrels per day.

Firefighters are working to extinguish the fire in the refinery’s processing unit, which removes sulfur from petroleum products. Residents of the Fahaheel district on the coast of Kuwait reported that they heard a big explosion and shared footage of thick smoke billowing on the highway on social media.

The national oil refinery said it has isolated the fired atmospheric residue desulphurization (ARDS) unit and the fire fighting is still continuing.

“The refinery business and export business were not affected, and the local marketing business and the supply of the Ministry of Electricity and Water Resources were not affected,” KNPC said on its Twitter account.

Kuwait has the sixth largest known oil reserves in the world.
