The Israeli Ministry of Health stated that Israel has confirmed cases of sub-variants of the coronavirus Delta strain previously reported in some European countries.
“Variant AY 4.2. The virus found in many European countries has been found in Israel,” said a statement late Tuesday.
The ministry stated that an 11-year-old boy from Europe was the carrier and added that the case was found at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. The ministry stated that the boy has been quarantined and no further contacts have been found.
AY 4.2. The variant has appeared several times in the UK.
Francois Balloux, a professor of computational systems biology at University College London, told AFP that this sub-variant is rare and does not appear to cause a significantly increased risk of transmission like other strains.
This variant was discovered when Israel was considering relaxing restrictions on tourism after the decline in cases.
The earlier plan to reopen the border failed due to an increase in cases caused by the delta epidemic.

At the end of August and early September, there were more than 11,000 new cases every day.
The authorities launched an active campaign to vaccinate citizens with a third booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, thereby reducing infections.
On Wednesday, authorities reported 1,487 new cases in the past 24 hours.
